This will probably be the hardest top 5 ever, because there's just so many songs out there to choose from. I imagine I will be clicking the edit button quite a few times on this one!
Produced by Phil Spector, this is easily the greatest pop song ever recorded. I know Phil & Ronnie didn't quite work out on a personal level, due to his being crazy, but they were really amazing from a musical perspective. The Wall-Of-Sound never came across so perfectly.
Even though my 9th grade German teacher tried to ruin this song for me by making us sing it every day in class, I still love this song. I can't believe so many people were freaked out by those haircuts. The biggest reason that time and again I come back to the 1 album.
Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name... Another song that flipped people out, even going so far as to call Mick and the crew 'devil worshippers'. I never got that from this track, what I did get was great lyricism on top of a funky beat. My Dad would disagree with me and tell me Gimme Shelter is better, but to me this blows every else the Stones did out of the water, and that's really saying something.
I can't believe I left this off my original list. This is one of my top 2 songs of all-time probably. Sheryl's voice sounds amazing in this one. The lyrics when I first really listened to this song really hit my heart hard. I think that's all it takes, hah.
Let's get one thing straight: Zooropa was trash. It was by far the worst album U2 had done to that point, which is easy to say of course, because everything prior had been at least a 3 star record. Zooropa took some great things from Achtung, Baby too far and made it pretty much unlistenable. Anyway, this song is an absolute gem. The choice to put Johnny Cash on vocals was one of the best decisions ever made in music. Bono could've done well, but Johnny did a million times better.
Like I said, this list can change at any time. I would move the tracks to an Honorable Mention section, since they could always move right back!
