I have for today my top 5 favorite albums ever recorded and released. How shocking, there's one for each of my top 5 favorite bands. I can't really put them in order, but here goes:
Favorite Track: Dr. Jimmy or Drowned
This is an album I didn't get into until I was around 14, on our bus trip to Michigan. From the instrumentals of Quadrophenia to my favorite track, Dr. Jimmy, it's all around greatness from the greatest rock'n'roll band of all-time.
Favorite Track: C.R.E.A.M.
Who can explain this one? Gritty, unfinished and raw. Protect Ya Neck definitely fought me for best track, but C.R.E.A.M. has a stellar beat topped with rhymes from Raekwon and Inspectah Deck that are perfect. This is also when I feel Method Man was at his peak.. and GZA was just getting started.
Favorite Track: Empty
I love, love, love this album. Synthetica is pushing hard to replace it here, but when the intro gives way to the hard guitar on Empty, you know shit just got real. Emily Haines reminds me every day why I love music so much.
Favorite Track: Spin The Black Circle or Tremor Christ
This isn't even when Pearl Jam really hit the peak they've been on, but it's a fantastic album. Some might prefer Ten or Vs. as their favorite early PJ album, but this one always got me as it came out in a time when I really needed the tunes. They fired Dave Abbruzzese during this album I believe, which I never liked but he was replaced by Jack Irons who is phenomenal.
Favorite Track: Surrender
U2 totally came into their own on their 3rd album. From the militaristic drums of Sunday Bloody Sunday to the clever quips of Seconds, to the driving bassline of New Year's Day, this album *is* what got me into music. I believe I was 4 years old when my Dad gave me my first cassette, and it was this album.
Some Honorable Mentions: Tool - 10,000 Days (2006), Genius/GZA - Liquid Swords (1995), Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die (1994), Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (1995)
On a side note, I've been jamming the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 40th Anniversary a whole lot lately. And The Who's Tommy. So all of this could change haha. I'll write more about my favorite bands later.
By the way, I'm no music snob and would never, ever want to claim to be. I like whatever makes my head nod or my brain think, or even just my ears perk.
